MJ Lenderman
MJ Lenderman brought his mix of indie rock and alt-country to Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse, delivering a performance that felt honest and unpolished in the best way. At 25, the Asheville-based singer-songwriter and guitarist has built a reputation as one of indie rock’s most promising talents. Known for his laid-back presence, Lenderman’s music strikes a balance between straightforward storytelling and sharp, understated humor, a combination that has earned him a dedicated following. His 2022 album, BoatSongs, received Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” recognition, and his work with the band Wednesday has only added to his growing influence.
Raised in Asheville, North Carolina, Lenderman grew up surrounded by the region’s mix of Appalachian tradition and bohemian culture. Like many, his first love for rock music was sparked by Guitar Hero II and his music loving family. By high school, music overtook his interest in sports, and he began recording songs at home with GarageBand, drawing influence from artists like My Morning Jacket and Jason Molina. These early years shaped the emotional, no-frills sound that defines his work today.
Lenderman’s music is rooted in a mix of influences, combining the rough edges of ’90s indie rock with the scale of ’70s arena rock and a touch of alt-country. His songs focus on life’s imperfect, everyday moments, often highlighting flawed but relatable characters navigating small-town life. His lyrics feel personal and real, with no pretense. Even as his reputation grows, Lenderman remains grounded, sticking to what matters most: making music with friends and staying true to the creative process.
Backed by his band—Ethan Baechtold on bass, Xandy Chelmis on pedal steel guitar, Colin Miller on drums, and Jon Samuels on guitar—Lenderman’s Atlanta set blended humor and heartache. The performance featured tracks from his latest album, Manning Fireworks, alongside earlier favorites, showcasing his ability to connect with audiences through songs that feel both familiar and fresh. Manning Fireworks shows just how far his sound has come, while staying rooted in the honesty that first made his music stand out.
