RESIDENT VINYL
This summer brings an exciting new chapter to the Old Towne Orange neighborhood. Born and raised in the city, Owen owns and operates the new record store Resident Vinyl. With over 20 previous years of music marketing experience, it has always been a dream of his to open his record store. While marketing comes easy to him he is truly mastering the art of DIY, doing his own graphic design, buying, selling, and accounting all while being the face of customer service. "When the opportunity to open a new space came up, I couldn’t pass it up,” he shares with a smile. This inspiring one-man show is looking to stay an accessible spot for all local music collectors.
While most record shops in the area focus more on selling older vinyls, Owen is looking to bring a different philosophy to the neighborhood. “When I shopped for records, I always looked for new things, eighty to ninety percent of our stock is new records," he explained. The stock for this store is a curated selection. Owen makes an effort to look to his friends and colleagues for new music recommendations, always keeping an eye on lineups for musical festivals and up-and-coming concerts to know the latest and greatest in music.
"Buying a record is a way of supporting your favorite artists," he emphasized. But his vision goes beyond selling records. At the owner's first location in Santa Ana, there have been many collaborations with the local restaurants and The Frida Cinema while also participating in pop-ups, and he's looking to bring the same community-orientated energy into Old Towne Orange. As records spin and music plays, this shop is already becoming a new beloved spot in the city for all local music lovers.
