The Non-Renewed

We all have those songs that, when we listen to them, pull us back to memories, to a nostalgic feeling we didn’t know we had until we listened to that song.

The Non-Renewed is a queer indie rock duo band formed during the pandemic who found each other through Vampr, a music connection app, Megan and Melik have been able to find their sound and their flow without having to deal with the downs of the industry.

The Non-Renewed just released their single “Dog.” It’s a poignant blend of melody and memory, evoking the bittersweet nostalgia of moments shared in a coffee shop with someone who left an indelible mark on you. As the song unfolds, its notes carry you back to that intimate setting, where every sip of coffee feels like a shared secret.

Going through a breakup is already hard enough, but turning those feelings into a song is one of the most beautiful human skills. “Dog” is about a breakup that one of the members had during New Year's Eve.

After much reflection, the song shows us the side of many events that are happening all at once. As humans, we go through the most gut-wrenching moments to the happiest moments in the same place/room.

“Dog” emphasizes the series of effects and scenes caused by breakups and the writer's mixed feelings while making this single.

Mellik talks about the process of making the song and how it was different from their other songs. “This one I wrote in bits in Garage Band, piecing it together and looping back the chords to riff lyrics over until it fell into place,” said Mellik.

Working long distance, Meghan and Mellik finished the song. Although the song is based on Mellik’s breakup, Meghan also put a piece of her and her essence into it.

Although the song has a melancholic and low-spirited tone, the melody adds a positive vibe to its meaning. Meghan and Mellik did an excellent job combining these emotions when creating "Dog".
